How did you end up in this job?
I always wanted to be involved in Food somehow, I worked as a pot washer when I was younger in the evenings, and the life of a Chef didn’t appeal to me with unsociable hours and split shifts. My Food and Nutrition teacher at 6th Form had previously worked in the food industry and knew of the Food Science and Technology course. I really enjoyed the open day and took the degree. We had an NPD Module that I took over the last two years there, which I really enjoyed. Therefore during my placement year and after I graduated, I solely focused on applying for jobs within NPD as this was the area I knew I wanted to be working in.
After you qualified, did it take long to find a job?
I was applying for jobs with an estimated grade because I was still finishing off my degree. It didn’t take long to pick up a few interviews as I was searching in a large area. I was offered the job a few hours after my last exam!
What’s the best thing about your job?
Apart from eating newly developed and interesting foods every day, the best thing about my job is seeing the products you have worked on for so long on the shelf in the store (and hanging around to see people pick it up and put it in their basket!).
How long have you been doing your job?
I have been doing my job for 2 years and 3 months at two different companies.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In 5 years, I see myself progressing to either Junior NPD Manager or NPD Manager role where I aim to be responsible for a range of product launches.
If you could give your 16 year old self some career advice, what would it be?
I would encourage myself to try as hard as possible all the way through school from GCSEs through to degree level to widen my opportunities. I have limited myself in applying for graduate schemes and retailers, even though I have a 1st class degree.
