Describe your job in 20 – 25 words:
My job consists of maintaining and improving machinery and systems whilst also providing solutions and support to operators and managers.
How did you end up in this job?
In college I selected a programme called ‘Pathways to apprenticeships’ which is where I studied and at the same time the college looked for a company that would employ me.
What was your starting salary?
My starting salary was £8,000 a year
How has your salary changed since then?
As an apprentice, your salary rises every year as you are deemed more skilled and capable. My salary rose year on year from £8,000 - £12,000 - £24,000 - £32,000
Since then we have also received pay rises taking my salary from £32,000 to £35,510
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best things about my job include getting to communicate with a variety of staff, which really opens your eyes to life and experiences. I work with some incredible engineers who never stop educating and training me and there is a great sense of achievement you get when you figure out a solution to a complex problem.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself as a leader, whether it be in a team or over a department.
If you could give your 16-year-old self some career advice, what would it be?
Get a trade as soon as possible, it doesn’t matter which one, but having a trade like an electrician, plumber or roofer etc will always make sure that you are at work and in demand. Anything that requires skill and dedication to achieve will always make you more valuable.
