What does an Advance Team Member (ATM) do?
We have two bread plants. Each plant has on production 3 work stations; these are mixer, lids on and oven exit. I run the team of 4 (the 4th person being the break relief) from the mixer station. It is my responsibility to manage the plant to ensure the team has the required breaks and that product quality is maintained to agreed specifications, that plant process controls are at the agreed specification and that the product runs are completed as per the planned schedule.
I also liaise with the Planning, Technical, Engineering teams or Shift Management as required. We have two bread plants. I run “B Plant”, with another ATM running the “A Plant”. If the First Line Manager is absent, I will step up and cover. I can also cover the packaging area when required.
Describe your job in 20-25 words.
Ensuring ingredients are called over to the mixer and the mix is of the agreed quality, in specification and in the prover within 7 minutes.
Give a description of a day in the life of a Bread Plant ATM.
Interesting. We work 12 hour shifts, 4 out of 7 days week, working both days & nights on a three weekly rota. The job is manual; you are always active and can move at times approximately 8-10 tonne of tin on / off racks daily.
Also you are working where plant and equipment temperatures can be in excess of 100oC, and daily temperatures in the summer can get very warm, so Health & Safety (H&S) and taking care of both yourself and your team mates is imperative.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing this career?
Go for it! It’s interesting, challenging & the pay is good, however, remember we work in very hot environments where H&S and team work are the most important things.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The job security, salary, people and team working.
I also really enjoy the process of making mass produced bread, because while the process is repeated daily, no two days are the same and I am constantly being challenged! One of our key ingredients is yeast, so until it is baked in the oven, it continues to grow. Therefore we have to ensure plants do not stop, so each day can be interesting, challenging, rewarding and very hard work.
If you had the chance to do it all over again, what would you do the same / differently?
Obtain more qualifications either at school or post school, maybe thought more about what I wanted to do, and how to achieve it.
What was your starting salary?
How long have you been doing your job?
Has your salary changed since then – if not do you see salary progression?
Yes, approximately 3% increase per year.
